Drug Drug Druggy I'm pretty fine with legalisation of heroin. I mean, what is really wrong with it? Well, true, it has an appallingly detrimental effect on the mind and body, and it destroys lives and damages society more and more everyday. I tell you, it's a good thing we've got cigarettes and alcohol to repair the damage it causes - I mean, if smoking didn't cure lung cancer, I don't know what would become of us. An old flatmate of mine committed two acts of violent assault while under the influence of alcohol in the three months I lived with her. When she was stoned, she just sort of sat there, languidly bitched about people, and tried to get whoever was around to have sex with her. When my friends are drunk, their charges include unnecessarily insulting people, property damage, assault, and shockingly ill-advised sex with partners ranging from the undesirable to the out and out married. When my friends are stoned, they just sit around, giggle some, and generally don't do a shiteload. Which sounds the most damaging to society? In terms of the health risk - I've had a couple of friends who took to fucking themselves up quite badly with a bit too much of the old speed. That's a pity, but you know, they're not hurting anyone except themselves. They’re not starting fights, nor are they filling my breathing air with carcinogenic fumes. And when they stop, their bodies will flush themselves clean in a couple of months - methamphetamine clears out of you system faster than cancer or cirrhosis. I don't actually think that Class A drugs should be legalised - I don't think people should be encouraged to hurt themselves like that. However, it's really not fair that certain deadly drugs are illegal, while other, more dangerous drugs are arbitrarily declared not only legal, but socially acceptable. --Apathy Jack |
